About SMH Design

Hello, my name is Susan Howie and I became interested in textile design several years ago. I had lost weight and started evening classes to learn how to sew and alter clothing. What I didn't expect was that I really enjoyed it and I wanted to learn more.

It was through a fruitful discussion with a Senior Lecturer who asked if I could draw, I said I could, I was self-taught, however, my drawing speed was slow. The next thing I knew I had started my studies towards an HND in Printed Textiles and over time I progressed to learning skills for soft furnishings and dressmaking. I began to study numerous courses part-time, from pattern cutting to corsetry and millenary, all the while continuing to develop my sewing skills. It was from here I decided to start my own creative textile business and SMH Design was born.

I had to decide what collection I wanted to develop and launch. I decided to review some of my previous work from my time as a student,  and chose one that inspired me the most - a graphics project.

Studying a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Printed Textiles required many projects as part of my assessment process. One of the projects that I found challenging and exciting was a project based on window shapes and structures in Glasgow City. It was the graphics project. I decided to review and develop that project and created  The City Views Collection Spring Summer 2022.
